| The lay bet is indicated buy a button with the word “lay”letting the player know that (see above photo) that his $600 will win $500. Since he is laying his bet against the “six” his vigorous was $25 (500X5%=25). |
Definition of a Lay Bet: Lay bets are similar to the place bets in the fact that you are betting directly on a number. The difference is that you are betting that the shooter rolls a “seven” before he rolls the number you are laying. Let us use “ten” as an example. There are three combinations on the dice (6-4, 4-6, & 5-5) to roll a “ten” and six ways (4-3, 3-4, 5-2, 2-5, 6-1, 1-6) to roll a ” seven” so there are twice as many ways to win as there are to lose. On the “four” and “ten” you will have to lay 2 dollars to win 1 dollar. So in this example if you want to bet behind the ten (the shooter will roll a seven before he rolls a ten) you say “You want to lay the ten”. In this example you lay $200 to win $100. So if the shooter rolls a “seven” before he rolls a “ten” the dealer will pay you $100 minus five percent of your winnings. In this case five percent of $100 is $5 so the dealer will pay you $100-$5=$95. That five dollars gives the house its edge.
The payoffs are as follows:
- “Four” and “Ten”: The odds pay 1/2 (one to two). That is for every $2 you bet you will win $1 minus 5% of the amount one. An example is you lay the “four” for $40. You will win half that which is $20. Then you will subtract 5% of $20 which is $1. You will have won $19 on your $40 wager.
- “Five” and “Nine”: The odds pay 2/3 (two to three). That is for every $3 you bet you will win $2 minus 5% of the amount won. Here you will lay the “five” for $30. With the five and nine the vigorous gets paid up front. So in this example you will have to give the dealer $31. The dealer will then place $30 behind the “five” and if it wins he will give you $20. So with these numbers the dealer will figure out the commission ahead of time (5% of the amount it will win).
- “Six” and “Eight”: The odds pay 5/6 (five to six). That is for every $6 you bet you will win $5 minus 5% of the amount won. Here you will lay the “six” for $30. It will pay $25 (30X5/6=25). The dealer will ask for the 5% vigorous up front ($25X%5=1.25 will be rounded off to $1) so in effect you will be betting $31 to win $25.
