Definition: A place bet is a wager that is placed directly on a number. You have six numbers to choose from, “Four”, “Five”, “Six”, “Eight”, “Nine”, or “Ten”. An example of a place bet is listed in the picture below.

The above place bet is placed on the “Nine”. The rules are simple. Every time the shooter rolls a “Nine” the player will get paid. If the roll is a “Seven” the place bet loses. Exeption: On the come out roll, remember place bets are “off” they will not win or lose

On every place bet you are betting that the shooter rolls that number before a “Seven”. Every time that number repeats it will get paid and only lose on a “Seven”.

What odds do I get paid on a place bet?

“Five” and “Nine”: The “five” and “nine” pay 7 to 5. So for every five dollars you bet you will get paid seven dollars. That goes for every amount bet. The ratio on these numbers will never change. If you bet $500 you will get paid $700, etc.

“Six” and “Eight”: The “six” and “eight” pay 7 to 6. For every six dollars you bet you will get paid seven dollars. That is why on a table with a ten dollar minimum the dealer will ask for twelve dollars instead of ten dollars for the six and eight. No, the dealer is not trying to suck more money out of your pocket; he is just making sure you get the proper bet. Remember, the house already has the advantage, by making improper bets you are just increasing the houses percentage.

Here I will explain some of the terminology used in making place bets.

Inside Numbers: The inside numbers consist of the “five”, “six”, “eight”, and “nine”. The reason they are call inside numbers obviously is because they are located in the middle. For all explanations listed below we will assume the table we are playing on has a minimum bet of ten dollars.

With a Pass Line Bet

Betting the inside numbers with a point of “six” or “eight”: In this example we will assume the point is six. Since we have a pass line bet we will already have a wager on the six (our pass line bet). To bet the inside numbers the dealer will assume we want all the inside numbers excluding the six. Since it is a $10 minimum table you will bet ten dollars on the “five”, twelve dollars on the “eight” and ten dollars on the “nine”. The total comes out to thirty-two dollars. 10+12+10=32. The proper and improper ways of making this bet are listed below.

Proper Terminology with Correct Change: If you have exact change you will grab thirty-two dollars and set it down (in one stack) in the come directly in front of your standing position and tell the dealer you want “Thirty-Two Dollars Inside”. Make sure the dealer see’s this or it may go as a come bet. Very rare but sometimes you play on a table with a bad dealer and boxman. Most good joints will correct this. Especially if you have been playing very consistently. See how easy that is, there is nothing more to say.

The Ways You Don’t Make the Bet: A lot of players make the bet this way as if they are doing you a favor (which they are not). They grab ten dollars set it down near the five and say “ten dollar five”, and then they go back to their rack and grab twelve dollars and then the say “twelve dollar eight” as they are setting the bet down near the eight, and then incredulously they go back to their rack again and grab ten more dollars and say “ten dollar nine” as they are setting the money down near the nine. These players think they are making the game easier and faster. Does it look easier and faster to you? Of course not. Look at how many more words I had to use so you can see how this would relate into time. Plus that is how we get bad backs. They are making us bend over three times instead of just one.

Proper Terminology without Correct Change: Let us assume you only have two $25 checks. How in the world am I going to make that thirty-two dollars inside bet? Oh no, what do I do? The answer is simple. As in the “proper terminology with correct change” example listed above you will set the $50 right down in the come directly in front of your standing position and say to the dealer “Thirty-Two Dollars Inside”. See how easy that is? The dealer will pick up your money, set it down near the boxman and repeat your bet “Thirty-Two Dollars Inside, Eighteen Dollars change” and give you $18 back without you even having to utter another word. Sure sometimes the dealer forgets the change (we are human) so if that happens do not be shy; speak right out and say “Dealer, you forgot my change”. The dealer will then promptly give you your change with an apology. This will happen to you once every ten thousand times you make this bet on average. So, please don’t sweat it.

I would like to apologize if I seemed a little too straightforward above. I am half joking with all my comments in this brochure, I am definitely not trying to demean anyone. Nothing is more annoying than a player that consistently asks for change then throws the money right back at you to make a bet. We have players that do the following. They will throw in the two $25 checks and ask for change. The dealer will break it down to ten $5 checks and then hand it back to the player (remember at this time we do not know they are making a bet) then the player will throw one of the $5 checks back at us and then ask for $1 checks. We give this to them. Then they will hand us back six $5 checks and two $1 checks and say “Thirty-Two Dollars Inside”. See what a waste of time this is? In both cases the player was left with three $5 checks and three $1 checks in his/her rack. In short they both ended up with $18 change. Your first inclination is, well isn’t it the players money and shouldn’t he/she be able to bet it the way he/she see’s fit? Yes and know. Yes, it is their money. No, it slows the game way down. This is how crap games get boring. The players don’t realize how badly they are slowing the game down when they are the ones causing the slow down. This is bad craps etiquette. This is how crap games can become very slow and boring and you will here other player’s getting angry. Remember, you want to sound like you belong at a crap table. The more professional you sound the more fun you will have playing; they do go hand in hand.
